Session Description:

Early attachments in a child’s life sets the foundation for their development. Therefore, it is important for a play therapist to be knowledgeable of the various ways to enhance attachment in parent-child relationships. This webinar will explore the application of attachment theory in play therapy sessions with children and families. Participants will spend time exploring the use of Filial therapy and Theraplay as historical and seminal play therapy theories to integrate into family play therapy sessions. Time will also be spent reviewing attachment-based play therapy approaches including Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), Child-Parent Relationship Therapy and Conscious Discipline to enhance parent-child bonds.  

Learning objectives: 

  1. Describe attachment theory and its application in play therapy sessions.
  2. List the different forms of attachment and how it may present in play therapy sessions.
  3. Assess the importance of integrating a caregiver’s history of attachment into the child’s play therapy treatment.
  4. Use specific play therapy interventions that can be used in individual, family and group play therapy sessions.
  5. Apply Theraplay-informed techniques that can be utilized to increase attachment in play therapy sessions.
  1. Explain the use of Child-Parent Relationship Therapy in family play therapy sessions to enhance the parent-child attachment 
  2. Explain Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) techniques that can be used in play therapy sessions to support attachment security. 
  3. Use specific regulation techniques to address attachment security in the playroom.
  4. Explore the use of specific homework for caregivers to increase their attachment outside of play therapy sessions. 
  1. Apply limit setting in play therapy sessions for clients with attachment challenges.
  2. Explore ways to infuse mindfulness into play therapy to support attachment security. 
  3. Analyze play-based interventions in individual and family play therapy sessions to increase attachment security
