Session description: Bullying is an epidemic that children across the country are experiencing in schools, in their communities and online. This workshop will help play therapists learn the importance of play-based assessments and interventions to support children who have experienced bully victimization. Key signs of bully victimization in the playroom will be examined along with play themes that may be associated with children who have been bullied. The use of seminal theories including Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy and Gestalt Play Therapy will be explored for use in individual and group play therapy sessions. Additionally, participants will learn how to engage caregivers in family play therapy sessions to provide filial therapy skills to support their children who have experienced bullying. 

Learning objectives: 

  1. Identify play-based assessments to identify signs of bully victimization 
  2. Discuss common play themes that may signal distress in connection to bully victimization
  3. Design measurable play therapy treatment goals and objectives to support children and adolescents who have been bullied
  4. Demonstrate Adlerian Play Therapy skills to use in play therapy sessions to support children and adolescents who have been bullied
  5. Explain Gestalt Play Therapy interventions to use in play therapy sessions to address distress associated with bullying
  6. Analyze filial therapy skills to use in family play therapy to enhance the parent-child relationship
