Session description:

Sand tray therapy can be an effective intervention in both group and family play therapy with clients of all backgrounds. In family play therapy, play therapists can learn the value of using sand tray as both an assessment tool and effective intervention to address a variety of issues within the family system. Within group play therapy, sand tray can also help with building group cohesion while helping clients of all ages address problem behaviors such as anger management, trauma and grief. This workshop will help play therapists gain the essential skills needed to apply sand tray therapy in play therapy sessions in group and play therapy with clients across the lifespan.

Learning objectives:

  1. List the stages of group play therapy.
  2. Identify sand tray prompts to serve as an assessment tool in family therapy sessions.
  3. Apply narrative play therapy in sand tray sessions with families and groups.
  4. Use sand tray skills in group and family play therapy.
  5. Describe sand tray prompts for family play therapy.
  6. Assess the group sand tray process.
  7. Compare seminal play therapy theories in sand tray within group play therapy sessions.
  8. Analyze sand tray friendship groups in group play therapy.
