Session description:

US born children of Latino immigrants face many barriers and mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and trauma symptoms. School based play therapists are instrumental in supporting mental wellness of parents and children in the schools. This session aims to highlight ways school based play therapists can implement individual play therapy with elementary aged students who are children of immigrants. Participants will explore different play-based interventions to address a variety of stressors in students of immigrant parents including anxiety, depression, PTSD, acculturation stress, and mixed status family stress.

Learning objectives: 

  1.  Apply the therapeutic powers of play in school-based play therapy with children of Latin American immigrants 
  2.  Assess the use of play-based interventions in schools to address race-based stressors with immigrant students 
  3.  Demonstrate cultural humility when working with students of Latine immigrants and their parents
