Session description:

Engaging adolescents and teens in play therapy can be challenging but is not impossible. This workshop will explore the different historical and seminal play therapy theories including Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy and Gestalt Play Therapy in individual and family therapy sessions with tweens & teens. Participants will learn how to engage these challenging populations in play-based approaches including sand tray, art, music, games and mindfulness play-based interventions. Additionally, attendees will engage in experiential activities to support the mental health of tweens and teens when engaging with social media. Specific information on how to ethically integrate technology into play therapy sessions with tweens and teens will also be explored.

Learning objectives:

  1. Discuss the use of technology in play therapy sessions with teens & tweens.
  2. List game play therapy techniques to engage tweens & teens in play therapy.
  3. Examine play-based interventions to address adverse childhood events in tweens & teens.
  4. Identify specific play therapy interventions to address related to social media use.
  5. Apply art-based techniques to use in individual and group play therapy with tweens & teens.
  6. Discuss the use of play therapy seminal theories in play therapy with tweens & teens.
